The phenomenon of resonance is one of the more interesting phenomena in physics. Its universal description applies both to destructive vibrations of the bridge under the influence of an appropriate excitation force and to the formation of new objects in collisions of elementary particles with appropriate energy. Quantitative study of the latter allows for a qualitative verification of the understanding of the interactions of colliding objects and, consequently, the construction of more precise interaction models.
The aim of the exercise is the analysis of the effective mass distribution of two muons from a set (ROOT file) containing two or more muons from about 100,000 pp interactions with a total energy of 13 TeV. As a starting point for the exercise, a program (C++) is available that reads the aforementioned sets and creates a histogram of the transverse momentum of muons. The task allows to combine the obtained effective mass distributions, longitudinal and transverse momentum distributions with elementary knowledge about proton structure functions, coupling constants and Feynman graphs.
